NATO history

NATO was established in 1949 by the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed by the U.S., Canada, and 10 Western European countries. NATO's mission is to provide collective defense of its member states in the event of an attack from any external party.

The organization has played a major role in most international crises since its inception, including fighting alongside the United Nations in the Korean War and Persian Gulf War and providing a peacekeeping presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina. NATO is headed by a secretary-general who works with an appointed council of representatives from each country that's a member of NATO.

Toward East: The Warsaw Pact

NATO wasn't the only military alliance formed after WWII. In 1955, seven Eastern European countries with strong ties to the Soviet Union established the Warsaw Pact to form a mutual defense agreement against Western aggression. The pact included Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany (the GDR), Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. Albania joined later in 1955 while Yugoslavia withdrew in 1968 at the height of tensions between Communist states and Western democracies during the Cold War.

The Warsaw Pact officially dissolved on July 1, 1991 as its member countries joined or were absorbed into NATO and other international organizations following the collapse of Communism in Eastern

In response to the breakup of Yugoslavia, NATO had a significant military presence in Bosnia in 1994, where it supervised the development of a new government under the Dayton Peace Accords. The accords ended the fighting between Bosnian Serbs, Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks), and Croats.

NATO's involvement in Bosnia ended on December 20, 1995, after which 150,000 NATO troops remained on-site as part of a NATO-led UN peacekeeping force called IFOR (Implementation Force). In December 1996, most IFOR troops were removed from Bosnia because their mission had been successfully completed. Security was turned over to other

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established in 1949. It was founded by 12 countries who agreed to protect Western Europe from the Soviet Union's military threat. The treaty states that an attack on any one of the member states is viewed as an attack on all NATO members.

The first leader of NATO was Lord Ismay, a British soldier, diplomat and politician. Ismay worked to preserve democratic values after World War II and helped draft the treaty that created the alliance.

Those principles include respect for human rights and democratic values, peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for international law. The site notes that each member country has the right to decide how its own military forces are used.

NATO started out with 12 members in 1949, but expanded over time to include Greece and Turkey in 1952 and West Germany in 1955, then later Spain (1982), France (1949) and Great Britain (1949; rejoined 1990).
